Xylazine potentiates the lethal but not the rewarding effects of fentanyl in mice

The results of the study contribute to the knowledge of the preclinical effects of combining xylazine with fentanyl. Although xylazine, at non-sedative doses, did not modify fentanyl’s rewarding effects, it dramatically increased the lethality induced by fentanyl. A high naloxone dose effectively prevented death produced by fentanyl/ xylazine. There were no differences between males and females in the lethal effects of xylazine/fentanyl coadministration.
